Activities : Snowmobiling in Iceland
For the adrenaline junkie, racing across a twinkling white landscape on motorized snow scooters is the perfect outdoor winter experience. 'Jetskiing on snow' gives you the chance to see the scenery without exerting yourself in the slightest.
Snowmobile tours provide a unique opportunity to mix adventure and sightseeing experiences together, and are a key to a great day in Iceland. The scooters have a top speed of 40 mph and
are able to tackle ice and snow terrain from the flattest of trails to near vertical mountains. Experience some of Iceland’s most spectacular scenery from the freedom of a snowmobile.
This is an all year activity. Most of the year – you will snowmobile on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, about 10 km distant. The glacier almost always provides excellent snow and sledding conditions. The view from the glacier top and feeling of exclusivity provide extra excitement to this activity. In high winter, depending on snow & weather conditions, the snowmobiles are sometimes moved closer to Reykjavík.
You will be provided with everything you need for a safe and comfortable ride on your trip. Protective overalls, boots, gloves and helmets are all provided to make sure that the trip is safe and comfortable. There is always a pot of fresh brewed mountain coffee waiting snowmobilers after the action at the mountain hut by the roots of Myrdalsjökull glacier, the most accessible glacier in Iceland. The hut can be reached by almost all vehicles – but please ask the hotel to call before you take a tour to find out exact road & weather conditions + the times of tours on a daily basis.
Larger groups or those not willing or old enough to operate machinery can enjoy a ride on a specially built jeep and other special transports. Please note - you need to be over 18 to drive a snowmobile (no driver's is license required), and all excursions include a helmet trained guide in the price. Single or dual rides are both available. This is by far one of the most popular activities here in South Iceland.
