Attractions : Keldur- Iceland oldest house

North of the villages of Hella and Hvolsvöllur is the ancient farm of Keldur. The farm is mentioned in several Sagas, including Njál’s Saga. It is located by a natural spa at the edge of a lava field – where water just seemingly incredibly from no-where seeps through the rock formations creating a brook. The current church is an ironclad timber church that was built in 1875 and it holds numerous items of historical interest.

After being damaged by an earthquake the year 2000, the museum exhibit is unfortunately now closed to visitors on the inside. It is however well worth an exterior inspection & look – as well as walking around in the immediate area which is full of beauty and surprises.

This is an area full of rumours and legends by locals and is said to be inhabited by both elves, hidden people and many ghosts. Please be careful to treat their environment with respect, as they can become quite pestering if they are offended.
